Choosing a receipt printer for the counter setup
Check receipt printer model, connection, placement and cash-drawer needs against your Australian POS counter setup.
Choose by matching the exact POS app and checkout device first; printer support can differ by connection. For a fixed Square counter, the Australian compatibility list names the Star Micronics TSP143IV UE (TSP100IV Series) and Epson TM-T82IIIL in USB and Ethernet versions.
Both models are listed as compatible with Square Terminal over USB or Ethernet. For Square Register, the Ethernet versions are listed as compatible, while the USB versions are not.
Place the printer for the work
At a fixed counter, leave room to reach the paper door and collect receipts, and plan where the cable will run. A portable printer may suit mobile selling, but staff will need to manage charging and pairing.
Square Terminal is a portable POS device with a built-in receipt printer and a battery designed to last all day without wires. It can be mounted and secured at a counter, and its 1/4-inch mount receptacle fits many widely available camera-style mounting accessories.
Count the print jobs before selecting a printer. Square uses printer profiles to assign jobs, and its Australian compatibility list separates countertop receipt printers from kitchen impact printers.
Compare connections
| Connection | Check at the counter |
|---|---|
| USB | Confirm the supported POS port or hub and where the cable will run. |
| Ethernet or Wi-Fi | Confirm that the printer and POS can communicate on the planned network. |
| Bluetooth | Confirm pairing, range and whether another till needs access. |
Square’s Australian instructions cover Ethernet, Wi-Fi, USB, Bluetooth and AirPrint. For an external printer connected to Square Terminal, Square requires Hub for Square Terminal.
For Square network printers on iOS, enable Local Network access under Settings > Square. Zeller POS supports network printers connected by Wi-Fi or Ethernet; USB-only and Bluetooth-only printers are not supported.
For Zeller POS, the printer and tablet must be on the same network and network segment (subnet). Common supported network printer families include Epson TM and Star TSP, mC-Print and mPOP.
Zeller POS uses standard 80 mm thermal receipt rolls; some models also take 58 mm. Check the paper size supported by the exact printer model.
Check the model and drawer together
For Square Terminal, the Star Micronics TSP143IV UE and Epson TM-T82IIIL are listed in both USB and Ethernet versions. For Square Register, choose an Ethernet version of either model if you want one of these listed options.
An Australian POS Plaza listing names the SAM4S H-Cube 102D thermal receipt printer with USB, RS232 and Ethernet connections. The listing shows $159 including GST ($144.55 excluding GST); confirm the exact model and connection with your POS setup before buying.
Square supports USB cash drawers, printer-driven drawers and the Bluetooth/USB Star Micronics mPOP receipt printer and cash drawer. A printer-driven drawer’s interface cable connects directly to the receipt printer; it opens automatically only when connected to a receipt printer, otherwise use the drawer key.
For an mPOP connected by USB, Square requires Receipts to be enabled in the printer station. Test a connected cash drawer from Square’s hardware settings.
Request a handover demonstration
Have the supplier demonstrate a sale receipt, a reprint, a paper change and recovery after disconnecting the printer. If two tills will share it, request a print from each.
For a Square cash drawer, run the Test Cash Drawer check. Keep the model number, connection and printer profile with the counter records.
